What is Shades of Red?

About the Site and Story...

  Q, What is a webnovel?
A, The short answer is, a webnovel is to a novel, as a webcomic is to a comic book. For a more detailed explanation, a webnovel is a weekly updated website that hosts an ongoing story, presented in written format. In this case, the "micro chapters" (the equivalent of a few pages out of a real book) are often accompanied by illustrations.

Q, Why is Shades of Red no longer a webcomic?
A, Shades of Red was one of a small number of fully colored webcomics available on the internet. However, I find myself without the time to devote to coloring as many as a dozen new pieces of art for a single page once every week or two. To those out there who continued to provide webcomics filled with full-color goodness every week, I tip my hat to you!

Q, This doesn't make sense! Fujin and Tendou already met in the webcomic!
A, The Shades of Red webcomic, heretofore referred to as the SoR Pilot, is not attached to the webnovel. Yes, it's about the same characters, and roughly the same plot, but it is considered a standalone work. It was, more or less, a "proof of concept", a prototype to gauge interest in Shades of Red.

  Q, How are names presented?
A, Names are presented in their native form. A Japanese name (ex: Amatsu Tendou) is presented with the surname/family name (Amatsu) before the given name (Tendou). A Chinese name is presented in the same fashion; surname (Shui) preceding given name (Song Mei), creates Shui Song Mei. Western names are presented in the format that we're used to here in the United States; the 'first name', or given name (Woodrow) precedes the family name (Kier), creating the name Woodrow Kier. For more information about the presentation of names, as well as honorifics and suffixes, be sure to visit the Language section of the Database!

Legal Matters

Q, Can I post Shades of Red on my website?
A, No, you may not. We have plenty of bandwidth right here on AnimeBelle.com, so mirrors are not necessary.

Q, Can I write a Shades of Red fan fic?
A, I would prefer that people do not write their own fiction based on Shades of Red. Everyone has their own ideas of what certain characters are like, how they would react to situations, and so on... Unfortunately, the interpretations of a reader may not be what the writer has in mind. Kishimoto, the writer of the Naruto series, may intend to pair Naruto up with Hinata... But that doesn't stop fans from pairing Naruto with Sakura, Sasuke, Neji, Ino, Kakashi, and every other character under the sun. I'm not sure I like the idea of those kind of liberties being taken with my own characters...
Beyond that, there is also the matter of copyright infringement. Aside from the fact that someone might accidentally mistake a fan fic for a legitimate Shades of Red story... I don't want to be writing Shades, minding my own business, when someone I've never heard of before suddenly pops up and claims that the latest twist I wrote, is a rip-off of a fan fiction they posted months ago! It's just a big barrel full of issues that I prefer not to get involved in.

Q, Can I draw Shades of Red fan art?
A, There's nothing I love more than seeing another artist's rendition of my characters! I ask that artists please be respectful of my original designs, as discussed above under the question about fan fiction... But that aside, please, be my guest!

Q, Can I sell fan art of Shades of Red?
A, No, you may not. While I am flattered by fan art of my characters, they do remain my copyrighted creations. Even if it is your own drawing of them, they are still my property, and I can not permit anyone to sell their fan art of my characters.

Q, Can I translate Shades of Red into [Insert Language]?
A, I'm afraid that at this time, I'm not allowing Shades of Red to be translated into other languages. However! This is something I will be putting a lot of thought into in the future, once more of the story is online.

Q, How can I support Shades of Red?
A, While I appreciate offers, the Shades of Red website does not need a staff. I handle all of the writing, art, and webmistressing myself.  Yes, I am a control-freak. The most helpful thing that anyone can do, is go to the Shades of Red store and purchase our merchandise! You'll be helping to pay the website's bills, and get some nifty stuff in return!
